Food advent calendar, “Spice It Up!”

Virtual advent calendar invites 24 bloggers from across the globe to share their holiday recipes.

In an effort to learn more about Christmas around the world German food blogger and baker, Jenny Rojas from Jenny Is Baking has initiated the food advent calendar, “Spice It Up!”.

Recently winning first prize for her Cherry Chocolate Mousse Cake in a baking competition Jenny hopes the idea behind the advent calendar will make waiting for Christmas more bearable.

‘The traditional advent calendar is usually filled with chocolates,’ says Jenny.

‘I had seen other German bloggers also doing virtual advent calendars and so I figured I may give it a shot.

‘So each day between December 1 and 24 readers get a small treat.

‘The food advent calendar “Spice It Up!” invites 24 bloggers from all around the world to create new recipes on their blog and to post it on a specific date in December.

‘I chose the theme “spices” as during the holidays traditionally many dishes use special spices.

‘I asked people to create a new recipe with a spice that is commonly used during the holidays in their country,’ Jenny says.

‘My hope is that I get to learn more about Christmas all around the world,’ Jenny says.

Advent, from the Latin word adventus meaning ‘coming’, is traditionally the four weeks many Christians observe in the lead up to the birth of Jesus Christ.

Commonly made of paper or card with 24 or 25 little windows, one is opened on each day in December and a Christmas picture or chocolate is revealed underneath.

Coloured plates will feature December 9.
